Tips to Avoiding a Negative Marijuana Experience

The way marijuana has been viewed, especially as medicine, has adapted and changed drastically over the last decade or so. Marijuana is no longer just a flower or edible; with varying degrees of strength and trustworthiness. Nowadays, dispensaries offer a large variety of pharmaceutical marijuana products; from tinctures, to vaporizable oils, the array of products is vastly larger then what was available previously.

As the array of cannabis products available has increased immensely over the last decade, so has the potency of cannabis products. Individuals who may have been casual cannabis users in the 60s or 70s, who are now revisiting the idea of cannabis use, are likely to be overwhelmed by the effects of pharmaceutical marijuana products, due to their purity & potency. Luckily, there are a few tricks to avoiding the overwhelming and sometimes negative effects of cannabis.

Trick #1: Relax, Hydrate and Stay Calm

One of the most reassuring things when it comes to the use of cannabis is that you can not overdose on it. So always remember, no matter how paranoid and anxious you may feel, the likelihood of you dying from marijuana is close to impossible.

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to counteract a negative marijuana experience is by your own psychology. Although it is understandable to initially panic when feeling the effects of cannabis, having thoughts of "will this last forever" or "when will this feeling end" when feeling "too high", but this mindset will just make the situation at hand much worse. It is important to relax, whether that means listening to music, going for a long walk or watching a movie to keep your mind occupied. In addition to staying occupied, it is important to stay hydrated and well nourished to prevent a bad experience from taking place.

Trick #2: Hot Showers & Capsaicin Cream

For those who suffer from the rarely occurring Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), taking a hot shower seems to relieve the nausea, vomiting and cramping that may be experienced after the use of cannabis. The steam and heat of the water seems to beat the feeling of nausea the same way capsaicin cream, which is a topical used to provide relief for pain, would for someone with CHS. It is important to know that by experiencing the feeling of nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps once or twice after the use of marijuana does not mean you have CHS. Keep in mind, high doses of cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabidiol (CBD) may actually induce nausea in some, so be careful of what cannabinoids you are using.

Trick #3: Black Peppercorns

If you are suffering from severe paranoia and anxiety after using cannabis try chewing on black peppercorns or black pepper; it certainly may benefit you. Interestingly enough, black pepper contains the terpenes pinene and caryophyllene, which are also contained in the cannabinoid CBD. These terpenes are known to be able to tap down the psychoactive effects of THC, balancing out its effects, creating a calming and therapeutic effect. If you have a tendency of getting "too high" or getting paranoid frequently after using cannabis, you may want to keep a 100% CBD tincture to ingest to alleviate those paranoid and anxious effects.
